LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
It is important to acknowledge the land because growing up as a third-generation immigrant in Canada, the traditional names of the territories were never mentioned. Indigenous people and their stories were talked about as something in the past, and all the struggles they faced were dismissed. It is easier to deny the rights of Indigenous people and our complicity in upholding the current system of oppression if we historicize their struggles and pretend they don’t exist.
I would also like to take this opportunity to commit to the ongoing battle of advancing anti-racism and decolonization while centring the voices, leadership, and joy of Black, Indigenous, racialized, trans, and non-binary communities. This work must go beyond words—toward action, accountability, and transformation.
Montréal/Tiohtià:ke
Loved Management Montréal acknowledges that we are located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka Nation, also known as the Mohawk people. Tiohtià:ke, now called Montréal, has long been a meeting place and home for many Indigenous nations, including the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabeg, Huron-Wendat, and others who continue to live, resist, and build on this land.
We recognize the deep ongoing connections between Indigenous Peoples and this territory, and we affirm our responsibility to support Indigenous sovereignty, justice, and resurgence.
We also recognize that the legacy of colonialism is not separate from the legacy of enslavement and anti-Black racism. Montréal is a city where Black communities have long contributed to its cultural, political, and economic life—often in the face of exclusion, displacement, and systemic racism. From early Black settlements to present-day struggles for housing, safety, and recognition, we honour the resilience, leadership, and creativity of Black peoples in this city.
Toronto /tkaronto
Loved Management Toronto is located in Tkaronto, now known as Toronto, which in Mohawk means ‘where there are trees standing in the water”. Today, Tkaronto is covered under Treaty #13 and the Williams Treaties. It is the traditional territory of many First Peoples, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples.
This territory is part of ‘the Dish with One Spoon’ wampum, a Treaty made between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas, and Haudenosaunee, where nations entered into an agreement to protect the land and responsibly care for its resources in harmony together.
Many of us call this place home; whether we came here as settlers, as migrants either in this generation or in generations past, and those who came here involuntarily, particularly those brought as a result of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery.
